Justo antes de irnos de viaje a Japón diseñamos el pañuelo "molinillos". Una vez allí, en el barrio de Shimokitazawa de Tokyo encontramos este mueblecito de madera... nos encantaron los cajones lacados, y de pronto nos dimos cuenta de que la gama de colores tenía un parecido asombroso a la que habíamos utilizado para los molinillos!... Le hicimos una foto y pasaron los días, pero como no podíamos olvidarnos decidimos volver a ver si estaba, y sí, seguía en el mismo sitio! Seguramente porque tenía que ser nuestra pensamos... así que se vino a Madrid con nosotros... un equipaje de mano un tanto incómodo pero mereció la pena :-)

Just before heading to Tokyo we designed the "molinillos" scarf. We then found this litle chest of draws in Shimokitazawa. The colours used in the draws really grabbed our attention since they were so similar to the ones we had just used on the scarf! We took a picture and a few days later it was still in our minds so we decided to go back to the shop and buy it! It was still there, waiting for us, it was meant to be ours we thought... It made the trip back to Madrid with us in the cabin as "hand luggage"... not very comfortable but it was worth it at the end :-)

Molinillos y mariposas

Este es ya casi un diseño corporativo...surge del juego con los módulos tringulares que forman nuestro logo, y es una vuelta de tuerca más al poster que diseñamos para regalar con motivo de la edición especial de "Bolsacos" para Marc Jacobs.

"Paper Windmills and Butterflies". This has almost become part of our graphic ID... It was created by playing around with the triangles that form our logo and it is also directly linked with the poster we designed to be given away with the special edition "Bolsacos" for Marc Jacobs.

Huellas

Los 5 dedos de la mano derecha de Javi, otros 5 de la de Julia... este fue el comienzo del estampado "Huellas", por cierto, totalmente personal e intransferible.

Five fingerprints taken from Javi´s right hand and another five from Julia´s... thats how our print "Huellas" was started.

Además es el primer diseño que ve la luz en forma de pañuelo... estamos muy contentos con el tacto de la seda, la definición de las lineas y los colores que se han logrado con la estampación.

This is also our first print that has been transformed into a scarve... We are so proud of the silk smoothness, the high definition of the lines and the well acomplished colours.

Sabemos que Paula de Deux Souliers (preciosísimos zapatos) ya luce uno por toda Barcelona, y además un ex agente de la policía científica ha regalado otro a su mujer. No teníamos que haber dejado estampada tanta información personal, ¡ahora sí estamos fichados!

We know Paula from Deux Soulliers (super nice shoes!) is already sporting one of our Huellas scarves in Barcelona, and we´ve also been told that a former police (from the crime scene investigation department!!) has gifted his wife with another one. We shouldn´t have left so much personal info on them, now we are filed!!

En Madrid los hemos sacado de nuevo (los paraguas, no las sombrillas)... y como andamos menos tiempo en la calle y más en el estudio nos ha venido la inspiración. 

Hemos tenido tiempo de hacer sellos de goma y probar con los colores nuevos... nos gusta el efecto de movimiento que por accidente surge al ir limpiando el sello de tinta... ¡A ver si alguno acaba siendo un estampado!

In Madrid we have pulled out the umbrellas once again, and since we lately spend more time on the streets than at the studio, inspiration has come!
We had some free time to make rubber stamps and test new colours... We like the accidental movement effects that you get when cleaning the ink off the stamps... Lets see if any of them ends up becoming a new print!

Yuki Ogura. Inspiración y nuevas pinturas

Descubrir trabajos tan bonitos como los de Yuki Ogura nos emociona, más todavía cuando supimos que fué una mujer que estuvo pintando hasta los 105 años. Volvemos con colores nuevos e inspiración de lujo...

We find very inspirational to come across such a beautiful work as Yuki Ogura´s, even more when we discover that she didn´t stop painting right until the year of her death, at age 105. We come back from Japan with new colours in our palette and a fantastic source for inspiration.

Por cierto, qué difícil tener que elegir sólo unos cuantos colores de entre una estantería con todas las gamas disponibles... ¿no os tiemblan las manos? ¿eso es ansiedad no?

Algún día podremos decir: "póngame uno de cada"

By the way, what a tough situation is having to choose just a few colours from a whole shelf packed with tins of just every single colour available, isn´t it? would your hands shake too? that´s anxiety, right? Hopefully one day we´ll be able to say "one of each, please!"

Yuzen

En Kyoto estuvimos aprendiendo el método yuzen, una de las técnicas que se utilizaban para decorar los Kimonos… que básicamente consiste en pintar directamente sobre el tejido, pero con una reserva previa de cera.

We were learning the yuzen method in Kyoto, Yuzen is one of the techniques that was used in Kimonos decoration. In the Yuzen method, the designs are directly painted on the fabric, but before that you have to apply starch or wax in the lines that separate the different colours.

Aunque nuestro maestro sólo hablaba japonés, sabía comunicarse de una manera tan exquisita, ordenada y meticulosa que casi no necesitamos preguntarle nada...

Although our master was able to speak Japanese only, his communication skills were so exquisite, tidy and meticulous that we hardly had to ask any questions.

Salvo al final de la clase, cuando quisimos saber qué tipo de pinturas y productos utilizaban para conseguir fijar la tinta y evitar que se expandiese al aplicarla… Entonces presenciamos todo un despliegue de mímica, y buenas intenciones, pero al final tuvo que apuntarnos la receta en un papel ante nuestras caras de estupefacción.

At the end of the class we enquired about the kind of paint and products our master used to fix the paint on the fabric and avoid excesive spread when applied. We then witnessed such an overwhelming show of body language and good manners that eventually lead into some notes on a piece of paper...

Con esta técnica se pueden llegar a realizar motivos complicadísimos, pero Julia para empezar practicó dibujando unas hortensias, una de sus flores favoritas, y que en España sólo podemos ver cuando vamos al Norte… por cierto, que son originarias de Japón.

You can get into very intricating drawings by using this technique. Julia started drawing some hydrangea, one of her favourite flowers. In Spain you can only find them when you head North. They are, by the way, originally from Japan.

Por la ciudad vimos muchas de ellas, en general nos encantó que prácticamente todas las casas tenían sus macetas en la calle, con flores o sin ellas pero todas parecían estar tan bien atendidas…

We spotted many of them in the Japanese cities. We truly loved the fact that houses often showed some flowers by the entrance, and they all seemed to be vey well taken cared of...
